Sometimes the best vacations are the ones where you do a little exploring and a lot of unwinding and resting. This honestly was my first resting vacation and I really needed it. That’s exactly what my recent 4-day cruise aboard Carnival Elation was all about—a perfect mix of island exploring and onboard relaxation.

We sailed from Jacksonville, Florida, with stops in Freeport and Nassau, and a full sea day to cap it off. Here’s a recap of the trip, from visiting a Bahamian brewery to catching comedy shows on board.
Day 1: Departure from Jacksonville
Our cruise kicked off in the afternoon as we set sail from Jacksonville’s cruise terminal. Boarding was smooth, and before we knew it, we were unpacked, exploring the ship, and grabbing our first (of many) drinks and meals. The first dinner I had the short ribs and that is one of carnivals best dinner meals in my opinion!
Day 2: Freeport, Grand Bahama Island – Beers, Bites & Bahamian Culture
We docked in Freeport around noon, and while the port area had some charming local vendors and shops, the highlight of the day was our tour to Bahamian Brewery & Beverage Company.
Bahamian Brewery & Beverage Company
Founded in 2007, Bahamian Brewery is a locally owned, independent brewery in Freeport and the home of Sands beer, one of the most popular brews in The Bahamas. The tour gave us a look inside the entire brewing and bottling process—from the fermentation tanks to the assembly line.
But the best part for beer lovers? The tasting room.
The beer lovers sampled multiple varieties, including:
- Sands (classic light lager)
- Sands Pink Radler
- Strong Back Stout
- Bush Crack (yes, that’s really the name)
- And a few seasonal brews
- Since I despise beer, I just rang the bell, it was an important job! Someone had to do it!
It was a fun, easygoing experience, and the beer was refreshingly good for those who indulged, especially in the island heat. I enjoyed my bottled water.
Driving Tour & Port Lucaya Shopping
After the brewery, our driver took us on a short tour around the city before dropping us at Port Lucaya Marketplace. It was bustling with color and music. I picked up some rum cake, browsed the souvenir stalls, and enjoyed fresh seafood from Daddy Brown’s Conch Stand—highly recommend if you like conch fritters or cracked conch. I am typically picky about seafood, but we all sampled together and I truly enjoyed the conch fritters.
Meeting Shanelle at Island Diva Creative Design
One of the highlights of my trip was meeting Shanelle, the talented founder of Island Diva Creative Design, located in the Port Lucaya Marketplace in Freeport, Bahamas. I felt truly blessed to connect with her and hear a part of her inspiring story while admiring some of her incredible art. Unfortunately, my visit was during a tour, so I didn’t have time to join one of her studio classes, but I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation and learning about her creative process and the rich Bahamian culture.
Her shop is a treasure trove of original artworks crafted with natural sea sponges—no brushes are used! She offers both a fully equipped studio and a variety of unique Bahamian art pieces. Through her work, Shanelle’s mission is clear: to showcase the essence of Bahamian culture, and it’s beautifully reflected in every piece she creates. Her passion for preserving and sharing the culture is evident in the way she engages with visitors, enriching their experience through art that speaks to the heart of the Bahamas.
Day 3: Nassau – A Low-Key Port Day
By the time we reached Nassau, I wasn’t feeling my best, as has been the case for much of this year. I decided to keep things low-key and stayed within the newly renovated cruise terminal. We spent only about 30 minutes off the ship, but honestly, the terminal itself is worth the visit. It’s packed with shops, art, and local snacks, and there’s even a wine-tasting room. The taxi fares are clearly marked at the platform, and you’ll also find a Junkanoo museum and amphitheater within the port. The improvements to the port are really impressive and make it a great spot to explore, even if you’re not venturing far from the ship.
I grabbed a few small souvenirs and watched the harbor traffic before heading back to the ship to rest.

Day 4: Fun Day at Sea
Our last day was all about rest and recharge.
We kept it light with a mix of:
- 🎰 Playing the slot machines
- 🎭 Catching comedy shows
- 🎲 Playing Deal or No Deal
- 🍽️ And eating… a lot
From sea-day brunch to evening dinner, Carnival’s food hit the spot. But mostly, I spent time doing exactly what I needed—absolutely nothing.
A Few Words About the Carnival Elation
Carnival Elation is one of Carnival’s classic Fantasy-class ships. While it’s not brand-new, it has a cozy, nostalgic charm and:
- Multiple dining venues
- A Serenity adults-only deck
- Comedy club, shows, casino, and games
- Great staff and easy navigation
It’s a perfect ship for a short getaway when you want sun, sea, and simplicity.
Final Thoughts
This 4-day cruise was just what I needed—a low-pressure getaway with a few cultural gems and a whole lot of rest. The tour to Bahamian Brewery, the visit to Port Lucaya, and meeting Shanelle at Island Diva were highlights I’ll never forget.
