Five Cruise Ships, One Unforgettable Day
The day I arrived in Nassau, five cruise ships lined the port, creating a bustling, vibrant scene I’ll never forget. The newly redesigned Nassau Cruise Port didn’t just manage the crowd—it welcomed us with open arms, Bahamian charm, and a world of color. With my health issues, I stayed off the ship long enough to do some gift and souvenir shopping and went back on the ship for rest. I have travelled to Nassau quite a few times before and the updated cruise terminal was a nice surprise.
What’s New at Nassau Cruise Port?
Following a $300 million overhaul completed in 2023, the port now accommodates up to six ships at once, with daily capacity for over 30,000 passengers. The transformation blends modern functionality with local heritage and artistry.
Highlights include:
- A Junkanoo Museum celebrating Bahamian culture
- A 3,000-seat amphitheater for performances
- A sleek new arrivals terminal inspired by iconic global architecture
- Updated storefronts, artisan stalls, wine bars, restaurants, and bars
Handmade Bahamian Treasures
Nassau’s charm isn’t just in its beaches—it’s in its people and their craft. As I wandered through the artisan stalls and professional updated storefronts, I discovered:
- 🌟 Handmade Christmas ornaments made from sea glass, sand dollars, hand paintings and star fish
- 🐚 Coconut shell magnets etched with island motifs
- 💍 Locally crafted jewelry with shells, coral, and native stones
- 🕯️ Candles and soaps with tropical scents like guava, hibiscus, and pineapple
Every item told a story—and supported local makers whose pride radiated from their work. I love to collect items crafted by locals. There is nothing worse than collecting a souvenir and find out it was “Made in China”; unless you are in China, of course.
Flavors to Savor
No visit is complete without a taste of the island. You can stop for cracked conch, sample guava duff, and cool off with a Kalik beer, served with that signature Bahamian hospitality.
From the Port to the Heart of Nassau
The cruise port connects seamlessly to downtown Nassau, making it easy to explore. These are all walking distance from the port:
- Parliament Square
- The Queen’s Staircase
- Junkanoo Beach
- Umbrella Lane
- The Straw Market
- John Watling’s Distillery
Whether shopping, sightseeing, or sunbathing, Nassau invites you to slow down and soak it all in.
This trip, I did not make it out of the cruise terminal, as I took this cruise mostly to rest and relax. I didn’t have the energy to explore longer than about 1-hour of shopping in the terminal. I have however visited all of the above on previous cruises.
Final Thoughts
From the massive ships in port to the tiniest hand-carved magnet, Nassau delivered beauty, warmth, and culture at every turn. This isn’t just a cruise stop—it’s a destination worthy of exploring all on its own.
Be sure to not miss the beautiful views of Paradise Island and the beautiful resort of Atlantis in the distance and the Lighthouse on the point. You can get some beautiful photos as the ship pulls out of the port.
