If you’re driving through Southeast Missouri on I-55, chances are you’ve seen signs for a place with a curious claim to fame: “The Only Home of Throwed Rolls.” That place is Lambert’s Cafe in Sikeston, Missouri — a legendary roadside stop where southern cooking, flying bread, and family fun come together in a way you’ll never forget.
Although we did not drive the interstate to get here, we drove the backroads of course, they are known for their large advertisements along the highways to draw people in, but when you walk in, there are really no advertisements needed. We drove the backroads to get here and word of mouth is really all that is needed here. A Little History Behind the Throwed Rolls
Lambert’s Cafe opened its doors in 1942, founded by Earl and Agnes Lambert with Earl’s brother Robert and his wife Ruby. Originally, it was a small-town café serving hearty country food.
The roll-throwing tradition began in the mid-1970s under Norman “Ole Norm” Lambert. One day, during a busy service, a guest shouted for a roll and Norm tossed it across the room. Instead of being upset, the customer loved it — and so did everyone else. From then on, throwing rolls became part of the Lambert’s identity.
Today, catching a hot roll is just as important as eating it. Servers wheel steaming trays through the restaurant and launch them across the room to eager diners.

The atmosphere inside Lambert’s is part southern family gathering, part roadside attraction. The walls are filled with quirky memorabilia, license plates, and vintage décor. Servers keep the energy high, cracking jokes, rolling carts of food, and — of course — throwing rolls.
The Menu: Comfort Food Done Big
The food at Lambert’s is exactly what you expect from a southern kitchen: generous portions, hearty flavors, and stick-to-your-ribs dishes.
Some favorites include:
- Chicken fried steak, roast beef, and pork steaks
- Fried catfish, frog legs, and gizzards
- Chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, and pot roast
- Grilled salmon and lighter options
- My personal favorite was their chicken pot pie
- Homemade desserts to finish – we had cinnamon rolls to go for the win; they had actually over made them for a catering event and gave them to us for free so that was a nice treat before we left.
The servings are huge — most people leave with a to-go box. Their menu is easily marked to display allergens and they also offer a kid’s menu.

What truly sets Lambert’s apart (beyond the rolls) are the endless pass-arounds. Throughout your meal, servers circle the dining room offering extras that you don’t even have to choose off the menu.

- Black-Eyed Peas – Southern-style, seasoned to perfection.
- Fried Potatoes & Onions – Sizzling, hearty, and filling and were my personal favorite!
- Macaroni & Tomatoes – A vintage southern classic.
- Apple Butter & Sorghum Molasses – Perfectly paired with hot throwed rolls.
You can enjoy as much as you want, making the meal feel like a family gathering at grandma’s house.
The Arcade & Family Fun
Another surprise at Lambert’s is the arcade and game area. While you wait for a table — and there’s often a wait during peak times — kids and adults can enjoy classic games like skee-ball, claw machines, basketball hoops, and racing games.
It makes Lambert’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a family attraction. Parents can relax knowing the kids are entertained, and the arcade adds to the fun, carnival-like atmosphere.

While Sikeston is the original Lambert’s Cafe, the concept has grown. Today, there are three Lambert’s locations, each carrying on the roll-throwing, pass-around fun.

- Arrive hungry. Portions are massive, and the pass-arounds will keep coming.
- Expect a wait. Especially during weekends and holidays. The arcade helps pass the time.
